1. gold rush - Taylor Swift
Lyrics by: Taylor Swift & Jack Antonoff
"What must it be like
To grow up that beautiful?"
In the beginning of Circe, she is shunned by her family for her lack of beauty and likeness to her family. She is sent into exile by herself for years where she discovers her powers as a witch. I chose Taylor Swift's "gold rush" to show a sense of what Circe might feel when she is told she is not beautiful enough. "What must it be like to grow up that beautiful" is a perfect line in this song that represents Circe's thoughts about her family and how they are beautiful when she is not. It also stands as a double meaning for Circe's jealousy toward mortals. She wants to be able to grow old and pass on, rather than remaining alive to live through years of suffering in more ways than one. Although the actual meaning of the song in context with Swift is about jumping straight into a relationship with someone, the lyrics describe this sense in another way without knowing the actual meaning.
"Gleaming
Twinkling
Eyes like sinking ships
On waters so inviting
I almost jump in"
This line from the song can represent the island she is stuck on in isolation in a physical sense. The water surrounding her is "gleaming" and "twinkling" in the sunlight beating down on it. There could be ships passing through on their own journeys. Circe feels the water is inviting to jump into. This could be because of her feelings of loneliness and isolation when she is in exile from her family. Overall, this song shows the sadness and rejection she feels for not being beautiful enough.

2. my tears ricochet - Taylor Swift
Lyrics by: Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff, & Joe Alwyn
"Cursing my name, wishing I stayed
Look at how my tears ricochet"
Again, in Taylor's point of view, this is told at her own funeral as if she is looking at herself. A different form of herself murdered the other and is weeping at the realization of what she has done. However, disregarding this, it could be seen as another physical sense into the isolation Circe is feeling. Like in "gold rush" she could feel invited into the water to jump and end her life. "my tears ricochet" follows up with this as a result to her actions. "cursing my name, wishing I stayed" is her family getting angry for her leaving and feeling consequences for shunning her. "look at how my tears ricochet" is her tears when she is already in the water. Her own tears are ricocheting off the other water surrounding her as a representation of it being too late to save herself. She weeps for her loneliness and she weeps for the venture she imposed. In another scenario, it could before she actually jumps. Her tears make the water ripple and bounce-ricochet- as she weeps for her own sake.

3. Je Te Laisserai Des Mots ( I'll Leave You Words ) - Patrick Watson
Lyrics by: Patrick Watson
English Translation
"Je te laisserai des mots
En-dessous de ta porte
En-dessous de les murs qui chantent
Tout près de la place où tes pieds passent
Cachés dans les trous de ton divan
Et quand tu es seule pendant un instant"
"I’ll leave you words
Underneath your door
Underneath the singing moon
Near the place where your feet pass by
Hidden in the holes of wintertime
And when you’re alone for a moment"
When focusing on the original instrumentals and sounds of the song, I immediately felt waves upon waves of sadness. The chords chosen, melodies, and harmonies provide a wonderful song that is directly relate these feelings. I chose it to show the sadness Circe feels when she is alone. It also stands as the ending to the section of the plot: Circe's isolation before discovery. "I'll leave you words underneath your door...hidden in the holes of wintertime" shows Circe secretly communicating with her family as a way to help her feelings. Her words said upon her time in exile travel to her family, hidden in ways as they don't know it's her. "Near the place where your feet pass by" as a location where her words remain in haunting senses to express her feelings about not being beautiful enough and anger toward her family. This sad song is a melody floating through her mind and the wind around her as her feelings melt through her. They remain in the air, travel throughout, and serve as her only way to express how she feels.
